MLB All-Star Week 2014

The rosters for the Taco Bell All-Star Game have been announced and the Minnesota Twins are finishing the preparation of Target Field for a five-day event that will bring an estimated 160,000 baseball fans to Minneapolis.  The 85th Midsummer Classic, which previously consisted of just three events, has grown into a weeklong event that features more than just the game. We'll break the week down for you so that you can easily navigate your way through the events, and provide you with some fun-facts to impress your friends.

FUN-FACTS
  • This is the third time that the Minnesota Twins have hosted the All-Star Game.
  • Each game has been played at a different location in Minneapolis.
  • Target Stadium has updated its Wi-Fi capabilities significantly to prepare for the game. It is perhaps the most robust Wi-Fi network of any ballpark in the country.
  • More than 500 working credentials will be handed out at the game for press and media.
  • The weeklong event is expected to bring an economic impact of $75 million to the region.
  • More than 1,000 volunteers, in addition to the Twins staff, helped to prepare for the event.
  • The Chicago Cubs were the only other team bidding for the 2014 All-Star Game.
  • Bars in Minneapolis will stay open until 4am on the Monday and Tuesday night of the All-Star Game.

HOW THE VOTING WORKS
  1. Over 20 million Firestone All-Star ballots were distributed at MLB ballparks.
  2. The American League team has 9 selected starters via fan votes. The National league squad has 8 fan-elected starters.
  3. Pitchers and reserves for both squads (25 for the AL and 24 for the NL) were determined through a combination of Player Ballot choices and selections made by All-Star managers  Mike Matheny of the Cardinals and John Farrell of the Red Sox.
  4. After June 26th, voting was only available online and via a mobile ballot.
  5. The polls closed on July 3rd, after 70 consecutive days of fan voting.
  6. The All-Star Selection show aired Sunday, July 6th, announcing the American and National League 33-man Rosters.
  7. The 13th annual All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote launched after the announcement.
