The Week Ahead in St. Paul: May 17th - 23rd

If you haven't noticed already, Saint Paul is BOOMING with activities, construction, events, and life! In fact, some weeks have so much going on, that even we get overwhelmed. That's why we're putting together this blog post – because this next week is jam packed with events that you won't want to miss! Microchip & Nail Trim Clinic
What: Increase your chances of being reunited with your pet by joining the St. Paul Animal Humane Society. This convenient, affordable event makes it easy for you to get your pet microchipped, and, if you choose, have his/her nails clipped too.
Where: St. Paul Animal Humane Society
When: The 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. 1:00 - 3:00pm
Cost: $30 + tax for microchipping. $15+tax for nail trims.

Pan Asian Arts Festival
What: Local Asian American & Pacific Islander arts groups will come together to celebrate May Asian heritage month with a whole day of family fun. 40+ Asian Folk dance performances, Hmong wearable arts exhibition and Pan Asian youth animation installation, Asian craft making, face painting, carnival games, and more!

4th Annual MN Monthly GrillFest
What: Taste your way through your favorite grilled foods and sample summer wines and specialty beers. See the hottest grills, gather recipes, and learn how to barbecue like a pro.

Dance Night 
What: Beasley's Big Band plays live for a night of swing dancing! Green Mill Catering will host concessions with pizza and beer, wine, and other beverages.

When: 6:30-7:00pm is a free swing dance lesson. Live music and dancing from 7:00-9:00pm

St. Paul Saints Exhibition Game
What: The St. Paul Saints will kick of their season at the beautiful new CHS Field in Lowertown with an exhibition game vs. Sioux City Explorers.

Noon Yoga
What: Union Depot offers free weekly noon hour Intermediate yoga classes for those of you looking for a mid-day break every Tuesday. Taught by the talented instructors from Studio 925. Reservations are not required. Participants are asked to bring a mat, water bottle, and towel if necessary.

Seniors in Mind: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair
What: Find out how a world-renowned traveling fashion show became a vehicle for African American empowerment, pride, and achievement. Joy Bivins from the Chicago History Museum will discuss the new exhibit "Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair."

11th Annual World's Largest Game of Catch
What: Meet the players, coaches, and manager of the St. Paul Saints. Enjoy food, drinks, and massages! Witness the unveiling of this year's Ball Pig. Bring a glove if you want to throw! Participants receive a free softee ball while supplies last.

The Main Event: New Kids on the Block
What: New Kids on the Block summer headlining tour featuring Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum selling artists TLC and Nelly. The highlights will include a 360-degree stage "in the round."

** Xcel Energy Center and Budweiser will host a pre-party for fans at Gate 1 from 5-7pm. The event is free and open to the public and will feature happy hour pricing and limited snacks available for purchase.

What: Play giant-size versions of many games including Chess, Checkers, Kinect Four, Dominoes, Jenga, Tic Tac Toe, and others!

CHS Field  - Opening Day!!
What:  Finally!! Whew, the party we've been waiting for! The evening gets started with a 7:05pm game against the rival Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Saints will literally come marching into CHS Field in a Mardi Gras style christening of baseball's new home in Lowertown. The first 7,000 fans will receive a commemorative Opening Day baseball cap. All the pomp and circumstance of a home opener will be on display with live music at both the Broadway and 4th Street entrances, a patriotic flyover, and a ceremony honoring the many community leaders, partners, and dignitaries from around the state who played a role in making this dream reality.

Saints Welcome
What:  Free music, giveaways, a performance by the Harding High School drum line, jazz by The Jack Brass Band, an art market featuring the works of 10 Lowertown artists, and free samples of a new blend of peach, raspberry, or lemonade-flavored Lipton Sparkling Ice Tea infused with tiny bubbles. While supplies last, Lowretown artist Ken Avidor is giving away a Hometown Hanky that depicts Lowertown landmarks.  Christos will be open for drinks and dinner. The Union Depot is giving away a pair of round-trip Amtrak tickets to Chicago to the winner of its "Get on the Selfie Train" contest.

Bingo / Open House
What: Show off your Bingo skills and meet new friends in Butler's Cafe. Free appetizers, cash bar, tours and tours of the beautiful facility!

Preview Party & Fashion Show
What: A soiree and original fashion show inspired by Ebony's legacy. Enjoy photo ops, shopping, and a cash bar with a featured cocktail by Du Nord Craft Spirits. The "Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair" exhibit, featuring 40 original ensembles, will also be open to guests.

Schubert's Fifth Symphony - Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra
What: In this program, artistic partner Thomas Zehetmair plays Bach's Violin Concerto in A Minor, a work that displays the intricate harmonies and spirited lyricism for which the composer is well-known. Complementing Bach's rich tonal language is Transfigured Night, an early piece written before Schoenberg's pioneering 12-tone work. The program closes with Schubert's light-hearted Fifth Symphony.

Uncovering the History of Your House
What: If you've ever wondered what is underneath that old wallpaper at your house, then this class is for you! Join Jackie Beckey, reference librarian with the MN Historical Society's Gale Family Library, as she shares research tips to help you unravel the history behind your home. Discover ways that you can use maps, photographs, city directories, and even state archive records to better appreciate the history of your home.

The Sparky Show
What: It's the opening weekend for the season of The Sparky Show! Watch sparky perform tricks, eat, and entertain audiences.

Art Making with John Marshall
What: A guided class where you will create a cyanotype  using your own drawing and sensitized fabric.
Where: Minnesota Museum of American Art in the Pioneer Endicott Building

Opening Day Historic Fort Snelling
What: Explore the historic buildings, visit with costumed interpreters and learn about life in early Minnesota. Children can try out the History Hunt, earn a special Fort Kid's button, and play games that were popular in the 1800s. Other activities include cannon and musket firings, hearth cooking demonstrations, and much more.

When: Opening Weekend goes from May 23rd - May 25th. 10:00am-5:00pm Saturday and Monday. Noon - 5:00pm Sunday.
Cost:  $11 adults, $9 seniors and college students, $6 children ages 6-17; free for children age 5 and under and MNHS members.
* On Memorial Day, guests can travel through the past with a living timeline of military life during this special day honoring American Soldiers. Veterans receive free admission.

Free Yoga
What: All skill levels are invited to this yoga class taught by instructors from Studio 925. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat, water, and towel if needed.

Death of the Empire Builder
What: Learn about James J. Hill's career and the public's reaction to his death.  View displays of photographs and newspaper articles, and a small selection of memorial volumes, including one given to the family by the Great Northern Railway, created by Tiffany and Company. Guest organists  will play music used at the Hill funeral.
Where: James J. Hill House
When: May 23rd 10:00am - 4:00pm. May 24th 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
