Saint. Paul Winter Carnival - Second Weekend



The second weekend of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival is just around the corner, and we want you to enjoy all that our wonderful downtown has worked so hard to put together for you! Last week, we gave you the history of the event, as well as information about Carnival Buttons and the ongoing events, so take a few minutes to browse that post as well! If you've done that, then you're ready to take a peek at the events going on this weekend:
Friday January 31, 2014

Kate Arctic Sizzle Cabaret (ticketed event)
What: The Klondike Kates are at it again, and this time they’re bringing some good old Minnesotan food to the show! While you meet Klondike Kate, 2014, enjoy a delicious lunch buffet of Minnesota’s favorite Tator Tot Hotdish, Chicken Wild Rice Casserole, salad, and rolls. Of course, there will also be a cash bar.
Where: The Klub Haus on Rice Street
When: 11am – 2pm (Doors at 11am)
Cost: $30

Saint Paul Winter Carnival Bouncing Team Tryouts
What: The Saint Paul Bouncing Team is a nonprofit, volunteer athletic association that performs aerial acrobatics at events throughout the Twin Cities. Each year the team selects new members through public tryouts.
When: 6 – 9 pm
Fun Fact: “Bouncing” is the oldest St. Paul Winter Carnival event and has been featured in most carnivals since its inception in 1886.



White Bear Lake ‘BEAR’ly Open Dance
What: A festive dance to kick off the White Bear Lake BEAR’ly Open -Golf on Ice Winter Fun Event. Music is provided by the popular local band Ole’.
When: 8-11 pm
Cost: $10

World’s Toughest Rodeo (ticketed event)
What: See some of the world’s toughest cowboys compete in a heart-pounding night of intense rodeo action, and some of the fastest cowgirls turn and burn at this indoor night rodeo!
Where: Xcel Energy Center
When: 7:30pm  (Doors at 6:30 pm)

Winter Carnival Family Day Events
What: Ongoing entertainment and events for all ages. Includes vendors, bounce houses, crafts, and more.
Where: the Landmark Center
When: 12pm – 5pm


Landmark Literati Presents: Paul Clifford Larson
What: Local author Paul Clifford Larson will be promoting his book Icy Pleasures. Bring your copy if you have one, or buy one at the event for a discount and have them signed by Paul.
When: Doors at 10am

Winterfest: A German Karneval Party
What: An outdoor tent party for all ages with live music, fire comedy act The Cabin Boys, food and drink, and kid-friendly snow activities.
Where: Germanic-American Institute, 301 Summit Ave.
When: 11am – 4pm
Cost: Free

Winterfest: Mit Euro-Dance Party
What: Head into the Summit Ave. mansion for music and dancing. DJs will be spinning retro ‘70s and ‘80s Europop, classical Karneval party music, and electronic dance. Specialty German cocktails and beer will be available. Masks and costumes encouraged.
Where: Germanic-American Institute, 301 Summit Ave.
When: 8pm – midnight
Cost: $5 or free with a carnival button
Note: Event is for ages 21+


White Bear Lake ‘BEAR’ly Open – Golf on Ice Winter Fun Event
What: An 18-hole golf course on ice! Real pine trees, a hospitality tent, food and entertainment – all for charity! Benefits the White Bear Lake Area Food Shelf.
Where: Ramsey County Beach
When: Tee times at noon and 1pm
Note: Golfing skills are not required to participate!

Inaugural Outdoor Baseball Game
What: Local teams playing baseball in the great Minnesotan weather. Come early for tailgaiting before enjoying the 5 inning game.
            Where: Saint Paul Saints’ Midway Stadium
            When: 1pm

Vulcan Victory Torchlight Parade
What: Find a warm place in the skyway system or park outside along 5th street as you watch Vulcanus Rex light up the streets of downtown St. Paul.
Where: Lowertown Saint Paul to Rice Park, along 5th Street.
When: 5:30pm start


Overthrow of King Boreas
What: Bid farewell to King Boreas at this dramatic overthrow where spring is encouraged to make its appearance soon!
When: Immediately following the Vulcan Victory Parade

Saint Paul Winter Carnival Fireworks
Where: Launched from Raspberry Island. View from areas near the Crowne Plaza Hotel
When: Immediately following the overthrow of King Boreas



Vulcan Victory Dance
What: The annual celebration of Vulcanus Rex’s victory over King Boreas! Dance at this huge party as everyone celebrates the coming of spring.
When: Immediately following the overthrow of King Boreas

Freeze Your Bags Tournament and Open Bowl
What: An outdoor beanbag tournament with prizes for winners! Family Bowl has free shoe rental.
            Where: Drakula’s 32 Bowl – Inver Grove heights
            When: Tournament start: 3pm  - Family Bowl: noon-5pm
            Cost: $20 per tournament team, $3 per game for Family Bowl
